He would have reached his 73rd birthday on March 26. A native of Schley county, Mr. Hearn spent his entire life in his home community, where his home was a gathering place for neighborhood affairs. His greeting to everyone was "I Jolly" and he rarely uttered a sentence without the expression. His nickname of "I Jolly" was so generously used that many acquaintances did not know his real name. Funeral services were conducted at Phillipi church Monday morning at 11 o'clock, with Elder Hassell McCorkle (officiating) and with the Rev. Roy J. Bond and the Rev. Charles D. Carter assisting. Burial was in the church cemetery. Surviving besides his widow are two sisters, Mrs. Bell Swearingen, Reynolds, and Mrs. Sophie Lumpkin, Shingler. Pallbearers were T.J. Cook, S.M. Etheredge, Emmett Dillard, James H. Hart, S.A. Manning and C.H. Bliss. Honorary pallbearers were D.R. Murray, Joe cheek, B.C. Cheek, J.R. Bridges, G.E. Phillips, H. Willis Hogg, John R. Wall, J.T. Murray, Heyward Johnson and C.L. Battle. CONCORD NEWS This community was saddened by the death of one of its best-loved citizens, Mr. J.M. Hearn. Friends and relatives join in extending to Mrs. Hearn the sincerest sympathy in her bereavement. Many of the peolple attending the funeral services at Phillipi were from a distance.
