Jones Dates: Birth date: November 17, 1945 Death date: May 25, 2009 Obituary: Mr. Stephen “Steve” Jones, age 63, died Monday, May 25, 2009 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 28, 2009 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Smith, Rev. Bill Dupree and Rev. Wendy Joyner officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Steve James, Richard Law, Rod Murray, Mason Law, Matt Jones and Brad Jones. Asked to serve as honorary pallbearers are members of Sons of Confederate Veterans and members of American Legion Post 558. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. A lifetime native of Sumter County, Mr. Jones was born November 27, 1945, a son of the late Edwin T. Jones, Jr. and Adele Ethredge Jones. He was retired from Georgia Power Company and served in the U.S. Army, 1st Air Calvary during the Vietnam Era and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a member of the American Legion Post 558 where he recently received the Legionnaire of the Year 2009. He was also a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans, a Cub Scout master and coached baseball. Mr. Jones was very civic minded and served on the City Council until his health failed him. He was an avid hunter, loved the outdoors and had a love for preservation. His favorite was his farm in Ellaville. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, former member of the Methodist Men, an usher and served on many different committees. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm, Wednesday, May 27th at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. At other times friends may call at the family residence, 1803 Rose Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a local charity of ones choice. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Jo Jones of Americus; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeff and Janice Jones of Macon, Jason Jones of Danville, Indiana; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Debra and Steve James and Donna and Richard Law, all of Leslie; one brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Dianna Jones of Gainesville. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Landon Jones and Kate Jones; nieces and nephews, Matt and Misti Jones, Brad Jones, Meredith and Rod Murray, Mallorie Law and Mason Law.
