October 8, 1958 Dr. Rainey Dies at Home Buena Vista, Ga. - Dr. B.T. Rainey, 71, died Friday afternoon at his residence, after an illness of several years. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, Buena Vista, with the Rev. W.M. Moore officiating. Burial will be in Ellaville Cemetery, Ellaville. Dr. Rainey was born February 2, 1889, the son of the late R.M. Rainey and Edna Peacock Rainey. He graduated from Ellaville schools and the Atlanta School of Medical, which later became a part of Emory University. He was married to the former Imogene Sears of Ellaville in 1911. Dr. Rainey had been a practicing physician 45 years in Marion and surrounding counties. Dr. Rainey was the doctor at the birth of more than 4,000 babies and only two mothers died of causes relating to child birth. Dr. and Mrs. Rainey celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary August 2. When Dr. Rainey started practicing he drove a horse and buggy on his rounds. After he adopted the automobile, he broke his arm cranking his first Model T Ford, and later lost an eye while attending to a leaking radiator. The Marion County physician practiced more than 40 years with one good eye. His patients called his good eye his X-ray eye, because he seemed to have the capability of looking at the patient and telling what was wrong without extensive examination. During much of his practice, he was the only doctor in Marion County and according to Dr. Rainey, his office hours were "all day and all night." Many local honors have been bestowed upon the elderly physician in recent years and there are numerous children throughout the county with the first name "Rainey." Survivors include his wife; a son, B.T. Rainey, Jr., Dublin; a sister, Mrs. Henry Wiggins, Americus; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
