Capt. W.H. Tondee

Capt. William H. Tondee was born in Marion County (now Schley), Ga., in 1841; 
and on November 8, 1912, answered the last rool call at his home, in Lumpkin.

Capt. Tondee began his business career when only fifteen.  He was living in 
Savannah at the beginning of the war, and enlisted with the Republican Blues, 
going with the company to Fort Pulaski for three months' service.  He then re-
enlisted from his old home, Ellaville, Ga., and joined the Schley Volunteers, 
serving first as orderly sergeant and afterwards as lieutenant.  He took part 
in all the principal battles around Richmond, and was severely wounded at 
Thoroughfare Gap.  After his wound healed, he returned to his command, and 
remained until the surrender.

He came back home penniless, but soon established himself in the business 
world.  A few years ago he removed to Lumpkin, and was there engaged in the 
warehouse business until his death.  He was a member of the Stewart County 
Camp, and was always a loyal friend of the Daughters of the Confederacy, 
making liberal contributions to the building of Confederate monuments in 
Lumpkin and in his old home town, Ellaville.  He was kind to the veterans, and 
many of them enjoyed the Reunions at his expense.  In 1868, he was married to 
Miss Mary Williams, of Americus.

Captain Tondee was public-spirited and optimistic.  He wielded an influence 
for good citizenship.  He was kind in manner, and in his consideration for all 
men, rich and poor, he exemplified the highest order of gentleman of the Old 
South.

William Tondee is found on the muster roll of Co. B, 17th Ga. Inf., "Schley 
Volunteers"

Tondee, William H.-4th Sergeant August 14, 1861.
Elected 2d Lieutenant May 1863. Wounded at Thoroughfare
Gap, Va. June 17,1863. Surrendered, Appomattox, Va.
April 9,1865.  Filed for pension in Stewart Co.  He was
witness for Sarah M. Winn, widow of John H. Winn of
Sumter Co., Jubilee Smith of Stewart Co. and Andrew
Jackson Hall (all on this roster).
