Graveside services for Mr. Joe M. Brown, 72, of Plains, were held Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000 at 11 a.m. from the cemetery at Andersonville National Historic Site with the Rev. Rodney Porter officiating. Mr. Brown died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000 at the Lillian Carter Nursing Center in Plains. Hancock Funeral Home, Inc. of Americus was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Brown, a native of Upson County, was born November 19, 1927, a son of the late J.M. and Maggie Mae Long Brown. He was a Methodist and a former employee of the Uniroyal Goodrich Company in Thomaston. He served in the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Upson County Chapter. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie S. and Gene Davis of Plains; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Scott M. and Donna Brown of Cochran and Gregory E. Brown of Ellaville; grandchildren, Charles W. Smith III and Cindy Smith of Montezuma, and Jeremiah Brown and Cody Brown, both of Cochran; a great-grandson, Charles W. Smith IV of Montezuma; a brother and sister-in- law, Ronald and Kay Brown of Thomaston; two sisters, Ruthel B. Quintero and Norma Buchanan, both of Gainesville; and several nieces and nephews.
