JOHN VERNON POWELL Mr. John Vernon Powell, 62, of Route 1, Ellaville, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 at Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at the Andersonville National Cemetery. Reverend Robert Orr officiated. Mr. Powell was born in Schley County on June 4, 1938. He was the son of the late Allmon M. and Mary Inez Powell. Mr. Powell was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He had worked at Cahmpion Home Builders in Ellaville and was employed by Sumter Livestock Association and the Schley County Sheriff's Department at the time of his death. He was a member of Ellaville Baptist Church and the American legion Post 191. Survivors include his wife, Martha Powell; one son, John Wayne Powell of Birmingham, Ala.; two grandsons, Mitchell Wayne Powell and Logan Powell; three sisters, Mary Miles and Nell Robinson, both of Americus; and Eugenia Battle of Ellaville; two brothers and sister-in-laws, Hixon and Marie Guest and Jo nand Charles Deriso. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Olivia Barfield and Inez Barlow. Active pallbearers included Shane Tondee, Jimmy Harvey, Gene Solinger, Norris Stanfield, Michael Wurtz, Kelly Buchanan, and David Streetman. The Legionaires served as honorary pallbearers. Watson-Giddens Funeral Home of Ellaville was in charge of arrangements. Additional Comments: Mr. Powell's grandparents were Clarence V. Powell and Olivia Allmon, both of Taylor county. His great-grandparents were William Ingram Powell and Mandy Frances "Fannie" Hill, also of Taylor county.
