She would have reached her 21st birthday Saturday, May 9. Miss Schofield had gone swimming with her cousin, Margaret Giles, 18. Returning to the water for a second dip while the other girl rested on the bank, she apparently was the victim of a heart attack. Miss Giles plunged in to rescue her, but the girl was dead when her body was brought ashore. The body was taken to a hospital, but three hours of artificial respiration failed to revive her. The girl had been employed by a Griffin mill. Until early this spring she worked at the Talbotton, Ga., telephone exchange. Graduated by Schley county high school in May, 1939, Miss Schofield was class salutorian. Supt. E.M. Palmer praised her as one of the most thorough and best all-round students the school has produced. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Union Baptist church in Crawford county. Burial was in the cemetery there. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Estelle Schofield, to whom she had already purchased and wrapped a gift for Mother's Day; three brothers, Frank, Camp Shelby, Miss., J.R. and David of Midway community.
