DEWITT SMITH DIES IN FIELD
Funeral Held Wednesday for Schley County Farmer, 38
Funeral services for Dewitt Smith, 38, well-known Schley county farmer who 
slumped to his death while plowing on his farm in Glen Holly community Monday 
morning, were conducted from Providence church in Marion county Wednesday 
morning at 10 o'clock, Elder Hassell McCorkle officiating.

Mr. Smith was dead when his wife reached him after being summoned by a negro 
who saw him lying in the field about 10 o'clock.

He was a World War veteran and a burial flag was furnished by the local post 
office.

Surviving besides his widow, the former Miss Nellie McDonald, are five 
children, Robert, Elsie, Billy, Shirley and john; his father, L.W. Smith of 
Sumter county; a brother, Claude Smith of Detroit, and a sister, Mrs. C.G. 
Campbell, Andersonville; the following half-sisters; Willie, Odell, Dennis, 
Ida, Leila and Hansel Smith, and Mrs. Elizabeth Stewart, all of Americus; Mrs. 
John Taylor of Thomaston, and L.J. Smith, now in a CCC camp.
