SMITH, 55 SCHLEY SOLON DIES SUDDENLY J.O. Smith, 55, Schley county's representative in the General Assembly and one of Ellaville's most prominent citizens, was paid final tribute Thursday morning by a throng which overflowed the Baptist church, for services at 11 o'clock. Mr. Smith died unexpectedly of a heart attack Tuesday afternoon about 2:30 o'clock. He had been feeling ill, but had been downtown during the morning. The Rev. Hugh Dozier officiated and was assisted by the Rev. Roy J. Bond and the Rev. C.D. Carter. Burial was in Ellaville cemetery. Ellaville stores were closed during the funeral hour. A native of Madison, N.C., Mr. Smith was born January 8, 1886. On November 13, 1904, he married Miss May Belle Taylor, of the same town. They moved to Ellaville about 25 years ago and Mr. Smith became one of the county's most successful farmers and sawmill operators. Ten Years ago, Mr. Smith was named a deacon of the Baptist church. Elected to the legislature in 1938, Mr. Smith was returned for a second term last September without opposition. Fishing was his favorite passtime, but the late legislator remarked to a newspaper writer this past spring, "I stay so busy, though, I don't get much fishing done." Surviving besides his widow are five daughters, Mrs. Carl McMath, Americus; Mrs. Cecil Howard, Cordele; Mrs. Lewis Easterlin, Andersonville; Mrs. O.T. King and Barbara Smith, both of Ellaville; five brothers, Claude, W.H. and Paul Smith of Walhalla, S.C.; W.Y. Smith, Louisville, Ga.; George Smith, Butler; four sisters, Mrs. R.P. McGuffin, Butler; Mrs. W.P. York, Red Boiling Springs, Tenn.; Mrs. W.L. Smith, Walhalla, S.C. Pallbearers were Dr. Paul Gill, W.L. Lumpkin, Dr. T.W. Wilson, B.E. Pelham, M.J. Arrington, T.H. Stevens. Governor Eugene Talmadge wired his regrets that speaking engagements prevented his attendance, appointed an honorary escort of general assembly members. The group included J.P. Hogg, Buena Vista; J.W. Edwards, Butler; Cleveland Rees, Preston; and E.F. Johnson, Cusseta.
