Walters. He was the second of three sons. He had early schooling in Atlanta and Savannah. He died at the age of 101 on Wednesday, August 1, 2012. He married Florence Singreen Walters on June 24th, 1937 and became parents to two sons: Charles Richard Jr., and Robert Edmond Walters. Dr. Walters and Mrs. Walters moved to Christwood approximately ten years ago after living in the garden district of New Orleans. He practiced surgery in New Orleans for 40 years and was on the visiting staff of Tulane Medical School with the final status of Professor of Clinical Surgery. He obtained his B.S. and M.D. degrees from Tulane in 1933 and 1936 with scholastic honors of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omicron Alpha. After six years of post-graduate hospital residency, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. He proudly served in World War II for four years exiting as Lieutenant Colonel. His surgical practice was primarily at Southern Baptist Hospital where he was Chief of Surgery for a period. He was a charter member of the New Orleans Surgical Society and the Surgical Association of Louisiana becoming president of the latter. Other professional memberships were the American College of Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Society, local, state and Southern Medical Societies. He was a member of the New Orleans Country Club and the oldest male member of the Southern Yacht Club for many years. He enjoyed sailing with his two sons, Dick and Bob and they won many, many races at the Yacht Club. He also was an avid fisherman and hunter and when he wanted to take it easy, he played either golf or contract bridge, which he loved immensely. As he became unable to partake in the more active sports, he developed a greater passion for contract bridge and played almost daily with the members of Christ-wood. He enjoyed dining with members and often would get chided for winning the bridge hands so often. His mind was sharp till the day he died. He was loved and respected by his peers at Christwood and will be remembered for his sharp wit. He is survived by his son, Robert E. Walters and his wife, Janice; Robert's two children: Robert E. Walters, Jr., his wife, Bambi and their three sons: Liam, Avery and Harlan.
