Year in and year out the local institution, until this year known as Ellaville High, has produced representative outfits that have commanded respect throughout the district. Lacking an adequate battleground in which to play and sometimes handicapped by small and inexperienced squads, coaches here have turned in exceptionally creditable tutoring jobs. Rivalry between county schools flared high during the early years of the sport here and contests with Fellowship, Glen Holley and other schools held intense interest. Later Ellaville broadened her programs and began competing with the better schools throughout the third district. Ellaville reached the pinnacle of success in 1927 by capturing the Dawson invitation tournament under the tutoring of H.G. McGee. This gave to Ellaville the mythical championship of Southwest Georgia, a distinction although closely approached, has never been duplicated. Marion Wall, Alva Dillard, Bill Manning, Tom Slade, Clyde Mackey, Gus Carter and Charner Wall comprised the squad of the championship team. In addition to their tournament win, they made a record that has never been excelled during the regular season. The teams of '28, '29, '30, and '31 were good but they failed to regain the marks of 1927. Other teams throughout the district were at this time beginning to build gymnasiums and Ellaville's outdoor forces were handicapped. W.M. Goble became head coach in 1932 and compiled a fair record until relived in 1935 by E.M. Palmer. Palmer in his first year as head coach guided the Jackets far into the Cuthbert tournament. Ellaville earned second place for Southwest Georgia. Palmer retired from active coaching in 1936 to devote his entire time as superintendent. Ellaville has reached out and picked a University of Ga., product who is a pupil of Rex Enright. So the strategy of Carey Hatcher was destined to guide the Jackets through the '36 season. Hatcher did a fine job, accumulating 15 victories against 6 defeats, winning the Methodist League Tournament and going two rounds in the district tournament. The present season has been fair for inexperienced lads have broken even in 10 engagements. The feminine end of basketball has not been neglected at Ellaville. .................some representative teams for the coach, Pat Robinson, has produced past three years. Coach Currie headed the girls for the past half of the season and made a reputable showing with her young players.
