ANN BROOKS WINS FIRST PLACE IN NATIONWIDE HOBBY CONTEST
Pretty Ann Brooks, 11 year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Brooks, has been 
awarded first prize in the sixth grade division of the national hobby contest 
sponsored by the New Wonder World Book Company of Chicago, Ill.
 
Anne was notified this week that the book ends she made and painted in her 
workshop were considered by the judges to be the best and most creative of 
hundreds of entries submitted by boys and girls of the sixth grade throughout 
the United States.
 
The Ellaville girl ripped cigar boxes and straightened the nails to obtain 
material for the book ends.  With a hacksaw from her kit of tools, she 
fashioned heads of dogs for the ends, and painted them.
 
Given a choice of several prizes, Ann chose a radio.  A bicycle was on the 
list, but she already owned one.
 
Her teacher, Miss Elizabeth Ross, will be given a complete set of New Wonder 
World books for use in sixth grade room at Ellaville consolidated school.
