Rupert Merlee Etheredge is the little girl standing beside her Daddy, Thomas 
W. Etheredge.  She was 1 year, 5 months old when her Mother, Martha Elizabeth 
(Murray) Etheredge died. "Mattie", as she was called, was born April 3, 1858 
and died on August 22, 1897. Thomas Etheredge was born in 1852 and died in 
1907. Margaret (Gooding) is "pretty sure" that the white-bearded gentleman, 
seated on Papa Tom's left, is Grandma Harriette's brother, Eli Taylor 
Lightner. The others are unidentified. 

Mama (Merlee) died at age 82 in 1979. I'm guessing she was 5 or 6 years old 
when this picture was taken. 

This school burned, and a new school was built on that same site. That's the 
school previously posted with the three identified children standing out 
front. When Sue (Hart) and I were early grammar school age, we were allowed to 
play in that building. The chalk boards, many school items (including chalk), 
and big sliding doors between the two classrooms were still there. Later it 
was restored and "reconfigured" inside as a home for Stephen and Ethel (Edge) 
Etheredge. That home was burned by burglars after Unka' Tebe had died, and 
Aunt Ethel was "out of town".--M J Weaver

Many thanks to Martha Weaver, Harriette Murray, Margaret Gooding and Norman 
Etheredge Manning for their efforts in researching and identifying some of the
