It is not clear from this paper, who owes who. Succeeding documents would seem to indicate that T.P. Barnes owed Alex Goodson, even though Goodson winds up being the defendant in this case. Also a mystery is what Sam Williams and R.T. Bivins have to do with this. Robert T. Bivins was a doctor who served in Co. G, 5th Ga Inf. and was living next door to Alex Goodson in the 1880 census and Elisha Barrow was several doors away. T.P. Barnes served in Co. G, 5th Ga Inf. with Alexander Asbury Goodson, son & namesake of this Alex Goodson as well as Bivins.) T.P. Barnes to(?) GM Schley County And now comes the Deft by his attorney R.J. Redding and J.Lee McCrory and defends the wrong and injury when & c and for answer says that he did not undertake and promise as plaintiff hath alledged against him and of this he puts himself upon the upon the county. (there would appear to be one or more words omitted here). R.J. Redding J. Lee McCrory Deft attys And for further answer in this behalf Deft says that Plaintiff ought not to have and maintain his affore said action against him because this defendant says that said plff before and at the time of the institution of said action of the Plff against the Deft in this behalf was and from thence hitherto hath been and still is indebted to this defendant in a large sum of money to wit: the sum of One Hundred and Ten Dollars and five cents, which said sum of money is due and owing from the plff to this Deft, exceeds the sum sued for by the plff, twenty dollars and fifty-five cents. And out of which said sum of money is due and owing from the plaintiff to the defendant. He, the said defendant is ready and willing and hereby offers to set off and allow the plaintiff the full amount of said sum sued for. And this the defendant is ready to verify and prove. Wherefore he prays judgement if the Deft ought to have or maintain his aforesaid action against him & c. R.J. Redding J. ALEX GOODSON Judgement for the plaintiff by the Justice of the Peace 961 Dist GM for eighty- nine & 50/100 dollars principal debt and (blank) dollars interest and cost. The defendant being satisfied with the judgement of the Justice of the Peace rendered in the above cause and having paid all costs and demanded an appeal according to the chatels in such case made and provided to ?????? E.B. Barrow and ????? him as security and the said Alex Goodson and E.B. Barrow acknowledge themselves jointly and severally bound unto T.P. Barnes the plaintiff for the payment of the eventual consideration ???? in said cause and all future costs in testimony whereof the said Alex Goodson and E.B.
