Burton, as principle & C.F. Crisp as security, all of the county & state aforesaid acknowledge ourselves firmly bound unto: R. Burton (chairman), W.J. Sears, J.C. Lasseter, S.E. Eason, Wm. Allen commissioners of Town Council of Ellaville, and their successors in office in the just sum of Two Hundred dollars (for the faithful performance of the office of Marshal of said town*** words in () crossed out) the following conditions. The consideration of the above obligation is as follows. Whereas said H.W. Burton has been appointed Marshal by said Comm'n of said town. Now should the said H.W. Burton well and truly perform the duties required of him as Marshal, then the above obligation to be void otherwise of force. This July 13th/70. H.W. Burton {L.S.} C.F. Crisp {L.S.} Test (attest?) Burton was Homer Burton, son of Robert Burton identified here as the chairman of the Town Council. C. F. Crisp was Charles Frederick Crisp, attorney, judge, U.S. Congressman and later Speaker of the House of Representatives (pretty good security as a co-signer). Wm. Allen, Civil War veteran and Sheriff of Schley County for a number of terms. W.J. Sears was Wm. J. Sears, father of Dr. W.D. Sears and also a doctor. He was instrumental in the founding of the Ellaville Baptist church and opened the first drug store in town. He moved to Kissimmee, FL shortly after this.
