Lackey, Ellaville Methoidist Church Invitation to Open House Schley County was created by the General Assembly of Georgia on December 22, 1857. It's 100th Birthday was celebrated on November 20, 1957. Legend says a handful of families who made friends with the Indians, settled in this section in 1808. Within four years a small village had been started at the edge of the present site of Ellaville. It was called Pond Town because the area was surrounded by ponds. After the historic land purchase of 1825 from the Creek Indians, the Georgia Legislature passed an act on December 11, 1826, to organize the territory described as "Lately acquired from the Creek Indians and lying between Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers and west of the Chattahoochee." One of the counties created by this law was a huge area designated as Lee County. In the law setting up Lee County, Williams store at Pond Town was designated as a voting place. Land grants after this time speeded settlement of this area and by 1833 the Government had established a post office at Pond Town, which became a flourishing trade center. The original Lee County was soon sliced into many others and when citizens petitioned the Legislature in 1857, Schley County was formed out of Sumter and Marion. The county was named for William Schley, Governor of Georgia, 1835- 1837. Wishing to get away from the ponds, most citizens advocated establishment of a new town as a county seat. One group wanted to locate several miles away in the exact center of the county and others argued the spot should be near Pond Town. The latter group prevailed and the Inferior Court purchased 150 acres of land at $10 per acre from Robert Burton, a wealthy landowner. Burton donated sites for the Methodist and Baptist Churches and for the Courthouse. The newly-formed town was named Ellaville in honor of Burton's oldest daughter, Ella. On August 20, 1859, the name of the Post Office was changed to Ellaville. Rural Letter carrier service first came to Schley County in 1902 when two routes were established. A third was added in 1903. A complete list of all postmasters will be found on another page of this program. (Above information taken from Centennial Issue of The Ellaville Sun by the late Raymond Duncan).
