John Lewis High School   Ellaville, Georgia   
50th Anniversary Year Aug 2007

Prior to the building of the new school named for Lewis, there had been a frame
school in the African American community of Ellaville serving grades 1-11, with
some grades meeting in nearby buildings. 
In addition, there were perhaps a dozen one-rm rural schools scattered
throughout the county for grades 1-7.This arrangement was typical in the rural
counties of Georgia until the late '50s, when a wave of school construction
occurred throughout the state. 

The new building of 1957 made possible a consolidation of all the
African-American county schools

Catered Dinners Available Before Concert
The 50th Anniversary Celebration of John Lewis High School is a project of the
Schley County Association of Concerned Citizens, a civic group dedicated to the
restoration, reuse, and preservation of John Lewis High School, Ellaville,
Georgia. Net proceeds of all Celebration activities will assist in the
restoration of the school building and grounds. 
 The 50th Anniversary Celebration of John Lewis High School, Ellaville,
Georgia, is an official event of the Schley County Sesquicentennial Celebration.
Public Service Announcement
Support the Schley County Association of Concerned Citizens’s campaign to
purchase and restore the old John Lewis High School for community use.
Step out to an inspirational and joyous Gospel Praise Concert on Saturday,
September 1, 2007, at 6 PM in the Old Gym in downtown Ellaville. Hear Jeff & The
Omegas, the Sunrise Gospel Singers, the Pettis Sisters, and Buena Vista Mass
Choir. Deacon Michael Sapp, Columbus radio personality, MC.
Tickets $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under may be purchased from
Schley County Association of Concerned Citizens members and at the door.
