Some observations.... This is a great photograph that is similar to another that is held by Billy McCorkle. That being the photo of the courthouse in 1906 with a similar group of boys and men standing in front of it. http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/schley/photos/menatcou10820gph.jpg Some of the faces seem to be the same, but only a few. I note the presence of what appears to be a telephone pole to the right of the entrance to the courthouse. The telephone lines reached Ellaville from Americus April 8, 1894 around noon, according to the Schley County News, so one would have to say the date of this photograph is later than that. I think that I see sheriff W.W. Lumpkin (4th from the left, standing) in this photograph with his badge pinned to his lapel. If this should be him then that helps to further narrow the date. Sheriff Lumpkin served from 1905 to 1914 and that would place this photo between those dates. Interesting to me is that he appears to have some long shaft in his right hand and in the 1906 photo a similar shaft lays across his lap. I also noted a distinct difference in headwear. In the 1906 photo there are a number of derby hats and in this later photo a significant number of "boater" straw hats. The popularity of these boater hats followed that of the derby. It doesn't confirm anything but leads me to the conclusion that this photograph is later that the winter 1906 picture. Contributing to that theory is the apparent high quality of the photograph itself. It is much clearer and better defined, albeit damaged, than the 1906 picture. I place the date somewhere between the summer of 1907 and 1914, probably closer to the 1907 date as the trees appear to be about the same size as the ones in the 1906 picture. Other interesting things are the clearer images of two partial buildings behind the courthouse of the right and left. The one on the left has been discussed a number of times as the probable Hudson-Scarborough home that was moved from Pondtown to Ellaville. Indeed, it bears a remarkable resemblance to a photo of that house found on page 6 of "Ellaville and Schley County, an historical sketch". The building behind and on the right is less clearly seen but columns are distinctly visible. It is in the approximate area of the first Schley county courthouse (depending on the angle of the photograph) and could be it. Do you see anyone you know? I think the man, second from the left, standing might be Dr. Robert T. Bivins. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaschley/photos7.htm Harris File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/schley/photos/menatthe13925ph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.5 Kb
