The following text appears beneath the photograph. "Murray & Stewart Bros., who owns and runs the Warehouse and Hardware store in the above cut are conducting the most successful business in town. Adjoining the Hardware store, is the Drug store of Bridges Bros., the leading druggists of the town. Their store would prove a credit to any city in the state. Next to Bridges Bros. is Park & Holloway. These two young men carry a full and up-to-date line of general merchandise. Williams & Walters are located in the two-story building on the corner, which is one of the most popular stores in town. They have been conducting a very extensive business for the past two years." Additional Comments: This photo appeared in the September 22, 1904 edition of the Schley County News. It is admittedly grainy and rather poor quality. It would seem to have been taken from the east end of Oglethorpe street looking west and while I can't be sure, I believe the businesses are in the order listed with the 4 year old courthouse at the very end. While you probably can't see it here there is woman in a long black dress standing on the sidewalk near the entrance to the first building. Note the unpaved street and hitching posts. An advertisement that appears next to the photo describes Williams & Walters as the store on the corner, it being a furniture store that also dealt in dry goods and groceries. An ad for Bridges Bros. drug store is also promoting their complete line of lamps and paint. Pictures in this newspaper were quite a rarity for 1904.
