She was born 6 July 1863, during the war. Her father, who was color bearer for Co. G, 5th Ga. Inf., was expecting a son and asked that the child be named for his fallen commander and friend Col. Thomas Black. There is a very ornate monument to the memory of Col. Black in the Ellaville cemetery erected after the war by his commrades. Col. Black's wife's maiden name was Curtis, thus the child was named Tommie Curtis Barnes in honor of Col. and Mrs. Black. She married John Marion Collum 30 Nov 1879 in Schley Co. Mr. Collum was an educator and college president. He also served in the Georgia legislature representing Schley county. He was the founder and first president (for 25 years) of the Third District Agricultural and Mechanical College located in Americus. This school is now Georgia Southwestern College. They were large landowners in Schley and Marion counties. They had five children and raised a niece and a nephew, adopting the niece. Tommie Curtis Barnes Collum died 17 Jan 1930 and is buried next to her husband John at Hopewell Methodist cemetery in Schley Co. Tommie Curtis' father was color bearer for the 5th Ga. Inf. He took this job seriously and protected that flag until his death in October 1905. After his death a controversy arose over who should care for the flag. Shortly after the death of Tip Barnes, Tommie Curtis wrote a very impassioned piece which appeared in the Schley County News regarding this controversy over the flag of the 5th Ga. Inf. It's worth a read and can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaschley/g5th.htm along with Tip Barnes obituary.
