Hidden History Uncovered

OLD 'WEIGHTS AND MEASURES' DISCOVERED IN SCHLEY COUNTY PROBATE JUDGE'S OFFICE.

Schley County Probate Judge Marie Giddens recently had some additional 
bookshelves built for the vault adjoining her office.  When the area was 
cleared to make room, an old wooden chest was found on the floor, beneath the 
cabinets that were removed.  Inside were weights, at first thought to be part 
of the bell tower clock works, but then discovered to be a set of 
official "weights and measures" provided to Schley County at some unknown date.

The label on the lid reads:  "The State pf Georgia Presents These STANDARDS to 
this county.  It is expected that the Sealer will keep then in good order.  
Dry Measures, used for articles heaped, should be the diameter of the 
Standards.  Those used for articles which are struck, can be of any convenient 
pattern, and should be struck off by a round stick, one inch diameter.  Flax 
seed is used for testing the dry measures."

Included in the chest was a heavy stand for the balance bar, which has 
elaborate habd painted designs in gold on a black background.  Two copper 
plates, each hung by three chains, hook onto either end of the balance bar.  
There is a copper gallon beaker, a quart beaker, and two half-pints.  A metal 
yard stick in a velvet lined wood box provides a lineal measurement standard.

The balance bar and the gallon, quart and half oint beakers are on displat in 
the Probate Judge's office in the Schley County Courthouse.
