HH 9/15/05. Another Blast From the Past! By LINDA ADAMS This week's photo is from 1943. It was taken in front of the Tea Room located on Oglethorpe Street beside Ellaville Floral Shop. This is the same building which is being renovated by Barrow Energies and is featured in another article in this week's paper. School Superintendent J.L. Duncan was taking the school bus drivers to lunch to honor Jesse McLendon who was home on his first furlough. Seated on the left is Roy Johnson, who drove his bus from Lowe Community. On the right is Leo Williams, driving from LaCrosse. Standing from left to right is Charlie Hill Greene, who drove from Andrew Chapel. Next was Willy Stewart from Ebenezer. Superintendent Duncan is next with Albin Snipes from Glen Holly right behind him. Glen Holly was in the vicinity of Hopewell. Raymond Duncan, son of J. L., is next in line. Raymond also served as Superintendent starting in 1949. In addition, he was the well known editor of the Ellaville Sun Newspaper. Jesse McLendon stands next in his uniform. Jesse's brother in law, Sidney Lee is next. He drove from County Line Community. Lester McMickle is next and he drove from Concord Community. Next is Grady Halstead who drove from Midway. Jesse McLendon also drove a school bus before joining the Army Air Core in World War II. At that time drivers owned their own busses. Jesse gave his bus and route to Sidney Lee when he left for the service.
