W.A. ROOKS, 95 My Great Grandfather, James Jackson Manning Smith He was born in Oxford, Newton County, Georgia in 1839 but the family lived in Ellaville in 1850 and 1860. They were counted in Sumter County Census in 1850 but that part was carved off as part of Schley County and in 1860 they were counted in Schley County census 1860. His father, Benjamin Tarpley Smith was a Master Carpenter and my Great Grandfather's occupation was Sawyer. My mother said he worked in sawmills. They left Randolph County Georgia in December, 1875 and went to Texas. His occupation there was Architect. I have a copy of a letter written by my Great Grandmother on his Letterhead paper from Burnet County, Texas dated 1893. In Texas he built among other things, churches. One such was a building for the First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas. The Smith family were builders and carpenters. One fact I have uncovered deals with William Spivey "Pony" Smith who in 1900 lived in Tift County, Georgia and built the church building for the Zion Hope Baptist Church in Tifton. Pony Smith and my great grandfather were first cousins. Will later this evening scan and send the tombstone pictures for the Texas Tombstone project-graves of James Jackson Manning Smith, his wife, Catherine Brown Smith, and their son John Smith. All born in Georgia.
