Wm. T. Black was paid for and erected by the men of the 5th Ga. Regt. who Col. Black led in battle. It is located in the NW corner of the Ellaville cemetery in the Black family plot. The following is inscribed on it's four faces. West face: To the memory of Col. Wm. T. Black, son of Wm. A. Black & Jane E. Black, born 19th October 1833, killed in battle Dec'r 31st 1862, aged 29 years. By the officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates, of the 5th Regt. of Georgia Volunteers. This monument is erected as a slight memorial of their late heroic commander. Col. W.T. Black South face: In the battle of Murfreesboro, while gallantly leading his regiment in a charge, waving his brightly gleaming sword above him, and shouting onward! onward! he fell mortally wounded and expired in the arms of victory. East face: SANTA ROSA-MURFREESBORO (flag crossed with sword) North face: In all the relations of life, he acted well his part, he was an obediant son, an affectionate brother, a brave soldier, a humane master, a worthy citizen and a pure patriot,--sealing his devotion to his native land with his own heart's blood. As a commander, he was ??? in the discharge of duty, kind and couteous to officers and men, affable and polite to all, even tempering military discipline with christian moderation, justice with bible mercy and winning the way to the confidence and esteem of his regiment by the manifest kindness of his heart and the uprightness of his character. This memory embalmed in the hearts of his contrymen will be kept ever fresh and green, and when the fruits of martyrdom are reaped, his name will be inscribed on the brightest page of his country's glory and live forever.
