Smith's obit in The Schley County News (Dec. 4, 1908 issue), Susie M(atilda) Sherman was originally married to J.F. Berry. The "History of Schley County" indicates she was first married to Rev. John Frazier Berry, Methodist minister on May 21, 1861. Her children from this marriage were Anna (Mrs. R.W. Edwards), Walter Sherman and John Frazier, Jr. (both of whom died in infancy) and Susie Adele. Susie Adele later became Mrs. C.R. McCrory. Rev. Berry was killed by lightning while seated at an open window in the Ellaville parsonage. Susie Sherman Berry married Dr. Smith in 1869. From this marriage were born Edward C. (died in infancy) and Addie, later to become Mrs. H.S. Munro. Susie Sherman Berry Smith really had an interesting life and was apparently quite a blessing to Schley county.
