There was great opposition to the match by the parents of the bride, though when two young people set their heads to get married such opposition is useless, as love laughs at locks and bars. It was thought last year that these young people had an idea of getting married and the matter was indefinitely postponed by sending the young lady off to school. This temporary separation did not quell the ardor of their affection, but had a tendency to intensify it, and although a close watch was kept upon them the union of two hearts that beat as one celebrated the ultimatum of their happiness. Last Sunday night at prayer meeting, just after the first prayer and while a hymn was being sung, Miss Cheney deliberately walked out of the church and got into a buggy, which was in readiness by a pre-arrangement, and the pair drove rapidly in the direction of Oglethorpe, fearing they would be followed if they had gone to Americus. From some cause they could not get a license at Oglethorpe, so they came to Andersonville and set a man to Americus for the papers. Failing again, a friend boarded the 6 o’clock train Monday morning and went to Macon and got the license. They were married at Andersonville about one o’clock Monday afternoon and thus a pretty little romance ended. We hope the offended old people will kill the fatted calf and let all be forgiven. NOTE: Harris Hill Sarah "Sallie" Cheney was the daughter and second of three children of John Newton Cheney and first wife Annie Stewart. She was born 1-2-1871 and died 6-24-1920. She is buried with her husband, James Richard Williams (b. 7-19-1859 d. 12-19-1916), District Court Judge, at Ellaville Cemetery.
