Poythress, brerfox@bellsouth.com McBride Methodist Church Screven County, Georgia A revised listing of inscribed monuments August, 2003. The modest objective of this listing is to simply update the most recent list of tombstone inscriptions done in 1957 by the ladies of the Briar Creek Chapter of the D. A. R. The list is alphabetical and, as in the original, no attempt is made to include genealogical notations. In addition to new burials, since 1957 several memorial stones have been added to graves that existed prior to 1957. This list includes the newly added stones plus the new graves since 1957 and otherwise is only intended to duplicate the list compiled by the ladies of the D. A. R. McBride's cemetery is a 300' x 240' rectangle directly behind the church itself. It is enclosed by a tasteful, low chain link fence. The rectangle's long dimension runs east to west. The cemetery is exceptionally well maintained. The original intended layout was for alphabetical family plots to run in north to south rows with the rows progressing west to east. The lettered stone marker blocks for this purpose remain. However, over the years this plan varied as family members with different surnames were interred in family plots. Also, the allotted space in some cases proved too small and new sites were thus located elsewhere within the grounds. For the above reason and given the small size of the cemetery, a locating schematic diagram is somewhat impractical and likely unnecessary. In locating a particular grave, generally the older the gravestone the closer it will be located by following the original plan. In any case, however, locating a particular monument and grave is only a matter of a few minutes. McBride Methodist Church is located on GA 24 (the Newington Highway) 4.3 miles east of U. S. Highway 301. Following is the list of monuments as of August, 2003: Jack Barnett August 29, 1900 January 18, 1949 Dorothy Luree Barnwell September 1, 1919 blank Floy Bazemore Barnwell December 28, 1888 September 9, 1968 Robert Lee Barnwell December 31, 1883 March 29, 1953 Alice D.
