Company F 5th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Cavalry "Screven Troop" Captain Moses Nathaniel McCALL, Jr., Commanding "The Fighting Chaplain" OFFICERS & STAFF Captain Moses Nathaniel MCCALL, Jr., son of Rev. Moses Nathaniel McCall and Caroline Magdelena Griner, was born January 6, 1831, in Screven County, Georgia. He enlisted at Isle of Hope near Savannah, GA as a private in Company B 2nd Battalion, Georgia State Troops. Governor JOE BROWN commissioned him as Chaplain and he held that position until he was elected Captain of the Screven Troop in May 1862, succeeding Captain Simmeon D. Connor who resigned. On 20 January 1863 the company became Company F of the 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry. Captain MCCALL was paroled at Hillsboro NC on 3 May 1865. He promoted to 1st Corporal in Nov 1862. He was transferred to Company F, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He transferred to Company C, 21st Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 15 Apr 1863, as 4th Corporal. Corporal Boston transferred to Company B, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 13 Feb 1864. He was captured at Trevilian Station, Virginia on 11 Jun 1864, and sent to Elmira Prison in New York state. he was exchanged on 29 Oct 1864, at Point Lookout, Maryland. John Best transferred to Company F, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Company roll for Aug 1863 shows him absent, detailed as a teamster. BOSTON was 41 years old when he enlisted as a 1st Corporal in Company B, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He enlisted in the Screven Troop on 8 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant in Nov. 1861. He was defeated in the election at reorganization and reduced to a private. He transferred to Company F, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He transferred to Company C, 21st Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 15 Apr 1863. Private Boston transferred to Company B, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 13 Feb 1864. He transferred to Captain McCall's Company, 2d Battalion Georgia Cavalry on 28 Aug 1862. On 20 Jan 1863 he was transferred to Company F, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry. Company roll dated 31 Dec 1864, shows him "absent at the infirmary camp for horses. He was on detail at the horse infirmary camp from 8 Aug 1864 - May 1865. [HEN - MIL REC] Edwin BOYKIN John Wesley BOYKIN, son of Sarah Emily ENECKS and Barton L. BOYKIN, was born on 17 Apr 1845, in Screven County, Georgia. CHITTY J. T. CLIFTON Phillip N. CLIFTON William W. COLDING, JR. enlisted in Captain McCall's Company, 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry 5 Sep 1862. He transferred to Company F, 5th Georgia cavalry in Feb 1863. Records show he was wounded near Atlanta, Georgia on 30 Jun 1864. Record for 30 Jun 1864 shows him absent wounded. No further records. COLEMAN Jeremiah "Jerry" Thaddeus COLEMAN, son of Rev Elisha COLEMAN and Mary Lucretia Scott NASWORTHY, was born 12 May 1833 in Emanuel County, Georgia, and died 10 Aug 1909 in Emanuel County, Georgia. Seventeen year old Jeremiah is found listed in his fathers household in the 1850 Emanuel County Census. Jerry enlisted in Company B, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 18 Sep 1862 at Camp Rose, Georgia. He transferred to Company F, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He is listed as in a Savannah, Georgia hospital in July 1863. No later record. He married Zilphia Durden ROUNTREE 24 Dec 1861 in Emanuel County, Georgia, daughter of John Rountree and Nancy Kent. She was born 16 Jan 1839 in Emanuel County, Georgia, and died 30 June 1915 in Emanuel County, Georgia. DELL Henry Green EDENFIELD, son of William Allen EDENFIELD and Sarah S. BASSETT, was born 5 Nov 1845. He enlisted as a private in Company D, 54th Georgia Volunteer Infantry on 30 Apr 1862. Henry was discharged at Beaulieu near Savannah, Georgia, on 10 Sep 1862 . Henry re-enlisted in Company F, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry 11 Nov 1863. Pension records show he was cut off from command while on scout duty near Bentonville, North Carolina in 1865. Sent to hospital at Bristol, Tennessee, 23 Sep 1864. Furloughed home for 60 days 27 Sep 1864. Furlough extended by Captain Hughes in November 1864. NEWTON Nicolas ODAM Joseph R. OLIVER David PARKER, son of James W. PARKER, JR., and Mary LEE, was born in Screven County, Georgia on 18 Ma 1838. He enlisted in Company B (Screven Troop), 2nd Battalion Georgia cavalry, on April 30, 1862 at Camp Cummings, Isle of Hope, Georgia. David transferred to Company F, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. On 5 Feb 1863, he furnished W. G. Chitty as a substitute. On 4 Aug 1863, he enlisted as a private in Captain Stubbs’s Company, 12th (Wright’s) Georgia Cavalry, State Guards. No later record. David Parker is listed in the 17th Military District Roll 26 May 1864. David died 13 Oct 1889. He is buried at the Zeigler Family Cemetery, Screven County, Georgia. He enlisted in Company B, 2nd Georgia Battalion on 30 April 1862 at Camp Cummings, Isle of Hope, Georgia. He transferred to Company F, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He is listed as sick at Hospital, Montgomery White Sulphur Springs, Virginia, on 30 Sep 1864. Hardy was listed as Absent sick in Screven County, Georgia since 10 Nov 1864, on the Dec 1864 Company Muster Roll. He surrendered with his Company and was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina on 3 May 1865. [EDENFIELD GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY - FAM RICHARDSON - MIL REC] Harrison PARKER, son of James W. PARKER, JR. and Mary LEE, was born in Screven County, Georgia. He enlisted in Company B, 2nd Georgia Battalion on 30 April 1862 at Camp Cummings, Isle of Hope, Georgia. He transferred to Company F, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Harrison was detailed as “Cow Driver” on 26 Aug 1863 by order of General Mercer. He surrendered with his Company and was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina on 3 May 1865. [EDENFIELD GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY - FAM RICHARDSON - MIL REC] Marshall PERKINS, son of Newton PERKINS and Pharabe BRINSON, was born in Burke County, Georgia. [FAM REC WANDA PERKINS STRIBLING] Malcom Cass PERKINS, son of Newton PERKINS and Pharabe BRINSON, was born 4 Aug 1831 in Burke County, Georgia. Malcom enlisted 9 May 1862 , in the Company E, 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry, under the leadership of Captain Marsh at Camp Cummings, Georgia. He was paid $22 for the hire of his horse. He is shown as enlisting in the Company F, 5th Georgia Cavalry in Oct 1863 at Camp Davant, Georgia. Malcom was the ninth child born to Newton and Pharabe Perkins. He had two brothers, Newton M. Perkins and Marshall Perkins, who also served in the 5th Georgia Cavalry. A half brother, Enoch Perkins, served with the Burke County Sharpshooters, Company D. The Perkins family resided in Burke County; their property backing up to Fort Lawton, the second largest Confederate stockade for Union Prisoners in Georgia, which is now known as Magnolia Springs State Park. Malcom married Mary Jane Wallace on 3 Mar 1853. He and Mary Jane were married for 49 years, until her death on December 5, 1902, and were the parents of twenty children. [FAM REC WANDA PERKINS STRIBLING] Newton M. PERKINS, son of Newton PERKINS and Pharabe BRINSON, was born in Burke County, Georgia. [FAM REC WANDA PERKINS STRIBLING] Joseph Wilson POWELL, son of Lewis POWELL and Temperance RAWLES, was born in 1837, and died in 1901. He enlisted In Sep 1861 in Savannah, Georgia, and was promoted to company quartermaster. He surrendered with his company at Greensboro, North Carolina in 1865 at the close of the war. Muster roll of 30 Jun to 31 Dec 1864, last on file, lists his name as "Present". Joseph married Eugenia SCOTT. [FAM REC Christopher Powell - EDENFIELD GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY] Lewis Knoblock POWELL, son of Lewis POWELL and Temperance RAWLES, was born in 1843. He enlisted as a private in Company F, 5th Georgia cavalry on 26 Jul 1863. "Last Civil War Soldier in Screven County" He died 9 Feb 1934. [MIL REC -- EDENFIELD GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY] Hill PURVIS W. Joe RICHARSON Archibald P. ROBBINS Arthur T. ROBBINS D. B. ROBERTS Lorenzo Dow Scott, born 1 May 1822, mortally wounded near Dalton, Georgia on 19 Aug 1864, and died 28 Aug 1864. He was hit in the right ileum, and the bullet lodged in his intestines. From family legend, his manservant, a Negro named July, pulled him from the affray to underneath a tree, and then later took him to a Union Post Hospital, where Dow later died. July supposedly walked back to Screven County from North Georgia to let the family know what happened. He had a marked grave in the Union Cemetery in Dalton, but the United Daughters of the Confederacy tried to reinter the remains of several hundred of these soldiers into the Confederate Cemetery at Resaca, but managed to get the remains mixed up. THOMPSON James Lee TOOTLE (TUTLE) James USHER, father of Joseph and Shepard Usher, was born 1825, and died in 1905 in Lyons, Toombs County, Georgia. He enlisted in Company F on 18 Aug 1863, at Camp Davant. Pension records show he was wounded in the left hand at the Battle of Akin, South Carolina, and was sent to a hospital in Augusta, Georgia, where he was given a furlough. He applied for a pension in 1897 and James Boykin signed the affidavit for him saying that he was in the same company with James and that they enlisted about August or September 1863 at Isle of Hope. WILLIAMSON Martin Luther WILLIAMSON James ZETTLER is listed in the Chatham County census of 1860 as being 15 years old, and living at a Savannah, Georgia, address. He enlisted as a private in Miller's Company of Partisan Rangers on 21 May 62, at Savannah, Georgia. This unit became Company C, 21st Battalion, Georgia Calvary on 11 Feb 62, at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company F, 5th Regiment Georgia Calvary on 13 Apr 63. The roll for December, 1864, the last one on file, shows him as being absent on detail as a guide for General Wheeler on 1 Dec 64. No further record on file. He was born on 23 Aug 1845, died on 5 May 1905, and is buried at Zion Lutheran Church at Marlow, Georgia.
