Griffin, Georgia Memorial Day The Patriotic Citizens of Griffin Turn Out En Masse The 26th we will never forget, Its memories are cherished yet - Come with evergreens and flowers And them devotedly, gently spread O'er those sacred mounds in showers ‘Neath which repose our noble dead. The dead who die for their country are not forgotten. Twenty three years have elapsed since the last of the patriot sons of the South fell before overwhelming odds; but yesterday those who turned out in Griffin to pay tribute to their memory were more numerous than ever before. The grounds were beautifully cleared and each grave in Stonewall cemetery was embellished with a wreath of flowers, while green garland were placed on the monument and adorned the pavilion. The Spalding Greys presented a handsome appearance in their new uniforms, and the triple salute they fired over the graves of the dead soldiers must have re-awakened their martial fire if the departed ever commute with earthly scenes. The order of exercises was gone through as printed, except that the music was all rendered - and excellently rendered - by the choir instead of partially by the band. Dr. Bradley, in delivering the address, made no attempt at high flown oratory, but spoke the more eloquently because simply and as one could speak who had shared all the hardships of the war which he pictured and had felt the grandeur of the unsuccessful struggle. His address had the rare feature of being neither too short nor too long and was listened to attentively throughout. May the dead soldiers rest peacefully till another memorial day.
