November 19, 1870 Dead. The Griffin Middle Georgian, of yesterday, states that the negro, Lewis Travis, of desporate [sic] notoriety, who was arrested in Nashville and brought to this place, died in jail on last Wednesday night. As it was stated in our last issue, it became necessary for a by-stander to shoot him. At first it was thought that the ball had glanced off from the skull, but since, in probing, it was found to have penetrated the skull and entered the brain. He committed many depredations in the neighborhood of Griffin-he shot Major Lovett, with evident intent to kill; shot Dr. and Mrs. Butler, with intent to kill, besides the killing of the Marshal of Covington. He was a most desperate character, and undoubtedly has been providentially brought to justice. Prof. J. S. Jones, Mayor of Covington, and others, were in Griffin on the day Lewis died, and identified him as the murderer of Mr. Barber, former Marshal of Covington. Prof. Jones passed through Atlanta last night, and informed us that the identification of Lewis, as the murderer of Mr. Barber, was beyond all dispute.
