Additional Comments: David Harper Coleman, Sr. was born in Henry County, Georgia on October 27, 1929 to Walter Coleman and Ruby Florence Starr Coleman. David grew up in the Birdie community of northwestern Spalding County, near the confluence of Spalding, Fayette, Clayton and Henry Counties. During his childhood, nearly all of his family were associated with the County Line Methodist Church in Birdie. David attended primary schooling in Vaughan, Spalding County. Secondary education was attended at Spalding County Schools. David served with the U.S. Army Air Corps from about 1946 to 1949, before returning to Griffin. Upon returning to Griffin, he worked for Griffin Sales and Service. While in Griffin, David met and later married Doris Rebecca Harris of La Grange, who is a direct descendant of the Harris families of Pike, Lamar and Spalding Counties, as well as the Jones family of Pike/Lamar county. Shortly after joining Scott Paper Company, David and Doris left Griffin for the first of many company transfers that would eventually land them in Houston, Texas about 12 years later. Walter Coleman (12/8/1905-7/15/1963) of Spalding Co., Georgia was the son of Walter Flem Coleman (1869-1933) and Mary Elizabeth Hammond (1870-1948), both lifelong residents of Spalding County. Walter Flem Coleman was the son of John M.C. Coleman and Sarah Wingfield Ogletree, both of Spalding County. Mary Elizabeth Hammond was the daughter of Charles Milas Hammond and Roseller Amanada Crawley, both of Spalding County (Rosie Crawley coming from the Crawley family of Pike County, Georgia). David Coleman's mother, Ruby Starr (born 1911, still lives in Griffin as of 2003), is the daughter of William Madison Starr (1880-1944) and Edna Jones (1886-1957), both of the Hampton area of Henry County, Georgia. William Madison Starr was the son of Milton B. Starr (b. 1856 Fayette Co., d. 1910 Henry Co.) and Beulah Elizabeth Moore (1862-1933), of Henry County. Milton B. Starr was the son of Hilliard M. Starr (1814-1877), the one-time owner of the now famous Starr's Mill. Edna Jones was the daughter of William Harrison Jones (1843-1923) and Mary Elizabeth Cooper (1847-1930). William Harrison Jones was at one time the pastor of the Berea Christian Church in Hampton, Henry County.
