He was the son of Col. James M. Putnam, and grandson, on his mother's side, of Rev. John H. Milner. He joined the Pinetuckee Baptist chuch, in Randolph county, Alabama, during the year 1855, and was baptized by Rev. Bro. Morris. He was married in Griffin, in 1858, to Miss J. Augusta Porter, Rev. Adiel Sherwood performing the ceremony. He afterwards baptized Mrs. Putnam. Israel Putnam was proud of his ancestry, being a descendant of the celebrated Israel Putnam, of American Revolution fame, and, on his mother's side, a descendant of the distinguished Milner family. He was a man of remarkable energy and industry. He had fine success as an insurance agent, for many years in Atlanta. He loved church work, and especially Sunday-school work, and thus was very useful as a Christian. But he has gone from us to the land of rest, for which he seemed fully prepared -- his faith remaining firm to the last, not wavering during his long and painful afflictions. May God's blessing rest upon the remaining members of his family. ??????? M.
