The news of the death of Mr. J. Eli Brewer, which occurred at his home near the city at 2:30 o'clock Sunday morning, caused universal sorrow throughout the entire city, He had been in ill health for some time and while his passing was met unexpected it came in the nature of a sad shock to his family and many friends. Mr. Brewer was one of Griffin's most prominent and popular citizens for many years, locating here in his young manhood and having been identified with Griffin's interests in heart and soul during his residence here. Possessed of pleasing personality and genial disposition, no man had more friends than Eli Brewer. He was universally popular with all classes and held to the highest esteem by all. He was noted for is liberality and did much for charity, scattering sunshine and gladness along the pathway of all with whom he came in contact. John Eli Brewer was born in Chattahoochee county, Georgia, near Renfroe, December 25, 1867, bein in his forty-eighth year of age at the time of his death. He moved to Griffin at the age of eighteen and was first associated in the ice manufacturing business with M. T. Bergan & Co., later purchasing the plant and conducting it until a little over a year ago, when he retired from active business on account of ill health. He was a member of the city council for twelve years, having served most efficiently for six terms in the municipal body. He was also a member of the famous old Griffin Fire Company, in which he always took much interest and rendered invaluable service. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges, and was the first presiding officer of the Griffin lodge of Elks, the members of which attended his funeral Monday afternoon in a body. Mr. Brewer was married to Miss Gertrude Hammond, of this city, about fifteen years ago. Four children blessed this union, being Lewis, John, Henrietta and Richard. Mr. Brewer was happiest in his home, being devoted to his family. Besides his own children, he took into his household his wife's sister, Mary Hammond, who shared all the joys with the rest of the family. Besides his wife and children, Mr. Brewer is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Brewer, of Cusseta; one brother, Mr. Edward Brewer, of Montgomery, Ala.; and three sisters, Mrs. John S. Jenkins, of Atlanta, Mrs. Stoney Patterson and Miss Lula Brewer, of Cusseta. Mr. Brewer was a member of St. George's Episcopal church, but on account of repairs being made there the funeral services were held at the First Methodist church, taking place Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The obsequies were conducted by Rev. D.F. Hoke and a large concourse of sorrowing friends were present. Many beautiful floral offerings were sent as last testimonials of love and respect by the friends of the deceased.
