Collins Called By Death Dr. Thomas Jefferson Collins, last surviving Confederate Veteran in Spalding county, died this morning at 7 o'clock at his home in Cabin District. He was in his 90th year. Born near Griffin on December 7, 1849, he was the son of the late James A Collins and Mary Foster Collins, pioneer residents of Middle Georgia. He enlisted at the age of 14 in the Sixth Georgia Militia, Company H, and served with distinction throughout the War Between the States. After graduating in 1885 from the Georgia Eclectic College of Medicine in Atlanta, he began the practice of medicine in Spalding county. He continued that practice until about a year ago, when ill health caused his retirement. He was a member of Meridian Sun Lodge No. 26, Masons. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from the Frank S. Pittman Funeral Home here. Rev. Charles S. Holder, pastor of the First Christian church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Fellowship churchyard in Butts county. Members of Meridian Sun Lodge Masons will have charge of services at the graveside. Surviving Dr. Collins are his widow; eight sons, George and Joe Collins, of Atlanta, Robert Collins, of Griffin, Charles Collins, of Nashville, Ga., B.F. Collins, of Mexia, Fla., Grover C. Collins, of Mexia, Texas, L.V. Collins, of Jackson, and James W. Collins, of Sunny Side; three daughter, Miss Dorothy Collins and Mrs. Mattie J. Hammond, of Griffin, Mrs. Mary L. Hammond, of Ray City, Ga.; three brothers, Charles Collins, of Jackson, Jesse Collins, of Mexia, Texas, and Will Collins of Rockwall, Texas, and three sisters Mrs. Nannie Fletcher, of Barnesville, and Mrs. Mattie Pullin and Miss Annie Collins, both of Dalton, Texas.
