Empire State – Spalding County, Ga. Week of May 7 & 14, 1856
W. A. Piper

Died in this city on the morning of the 6th inst., of pulmonary consumption, 
after a lingering illness of several months. W. A. Piper, a worthy and very 
useful citizen.   He leaves a fond and affectionate wife, and a large circle of 
friends and acquaintances who deeply mourn his early death.

Week of May 7, 1856

Griffin Ga., May 6th, 1856
At a called meeting of Warren Lodge, No. 20, I.O.O.F., the undersigned were 
appointed a committee to draft appropriate resolutions on the death of our 
worthy brother, W. A. Piper.  And they now respectfully submit the following 
report:

Whereas In the inscrutable, yet just and merciful ways of Divine Providence, it 
has pleased God, to sever another bright link from the chain of fellowship, 
that binds us together in the bonds of Friendship, Love and Truth - - to take 
one more from our loved circle, and leave a void in our hearts, never to be 
filled.   Be it there fore….

Resolved 1st,  That in the death of our much loved brother, W. A. Piper, Warren 
Lodge has sustained no ordinary loss – a lost long to be remembered and 
severely felt.   As an Odd Fellow, while in health, he was faithful in every 
duty imposed upon him, by our laws.    Ever ready to vindicate by practice, the 
objects of or Order.    True to his obligation, his hand and heart were ever 
open to a distressed brother; and though his seat be now vacant in the Lodge, 
yet will memory endow it with cherished recollections never to be forgotten; 
and we can only render this last sad tribute to one, whom in life, we loved, 
whom in death we mourn, not as one lost, but “only gone before.”

2nd,  That brother Piper, in life, bore the character of a valuable citizen, 
kind neighbor, and tender and affectionate husband; and that this community, 
his intimate friends, and his bereaved and stricken wife, suffer in common with 
our Lodge, and mourn the sudden dispensation that has called from our midst, 
one whom we all so dearly loved and prized.

3rd.  That we offer to his mourning and stricken family, our heart felt 
sympathies in this their hour of trial and sadness, and that the Secretary be 
instructed to furnish them with a copy of these resolution.

4th.  That we will never wear the usual badge of mourning for the space of 
thirty days.

5th.  That these resolutions be published in the city papers.
