                          HOWARD'S CAREER IN GEORGIA
                               15 December 1901

     Rev. G. F. B. Howard has been released from the federal penitentiary in
Ohio after serving six years, and turned over to the Michigan authorities. Just
before completing his term at Columbus, Howard escaped, went to Michigan and got
in some of his work there. He was recaptured and served out his term. The Rev.
Howard figured in Georgia quite prominently. For a time he was pastor of the
Baptist Church at Forsyth, and was married at that place. He was considered
eloquent in the pulpit and was in demand as a commencement orator, once
preaching the annual sermon at Gordon Institute at Barnesville. Howard left
Forsyth and went to Jackson, Tenn., where he assumed the presidency of a Baptist
college. He became involved in trouble with members of the church, and this
trouble led to the charges of swindling, on which he was convicted in federal
court. The trial was bitterly contested, many of the member's of Howard's church
standing by him and refusing to believe the charges. Witnesses were present from
Georgia, and many unsavory revelations were made concerning Howard's career in
Georgia. He first figured in the state in Elbert county, but not under the name
of Howard. While in Elbert, witnesses stated Howard paid little attention to the
color line. In spite of able lawyers, and an eloquent speech by himself, Howard
was convicted. Howard is an Englishman, according to his statement, and once
served in the British navy.
