Joseph W. Bennett of Brunswick and Col. J. C. McDonald of Waycross. The line of the Monroe and Campton Telephone Company has been completed and Mr. Emory Darby put in instruments last Thursday. Monroe is now connected with Campton, Bethlehem and Winder. The tax levied for county purposes in Jackson county is 62 cents and 9 mills on each $100.00 worth of property. One thousand two hundred and forty dollars is required to pay the expenses of the city court of that county. Capt. James A. Hunt, one of Washington county's most popular citizens, and a Confederate veteran, died at his home near Harrison last Wednesday afternoon. He was stricken with paralysis a few days previous, which caused his death. Griffin Call: Cotton has been rolling in at a lively pace the past week. Nearly 4,000 bales have been received at different warehouses up to date. The sales the past three days are about as heavy as the reciepts. The ruling prices have been 5 3/4 to 6 cents, with a weak demand. Sunday might Miss Mary Martin, a maiden lady, living alone, at Columbus, attracted the attention of her neighbors by her loud screams. The lady stated the she was aroused by some one trying to choke her. She screamed for help and the man jumped through the window and escaped. Miss Martin failed to recognize her assailant. N. Brooks of Lawrenceville swore out a warrant Tuesday for the arrest of Hiram Raney and his brother along with Z. T. King, the later a prominent citizen of the town, for arson. The dwelling which he occupied and contents were destroyed by fire last night. Brooks found tracks this morning leading from his house to the Raneys. They are tenants of King. The house was insured. Brooks says King approached him some time ago and asked him to go with him and burn the house and then obtain insurance. He claims Raney is a tool of King.
