Biographical Sketches Luther H. Coe. The above is a faithful likeness of our friend, Mr. L.H. Coe, postmaster, merchant and farmer at Eastanollee, Ga. He is the eldest of a family of eight brothers and four sisters, all iving but one brother and one sister. He was born at Rockford, N.C., Jan. 20, 1858, of German-Irish descent, but was reared in Cherokee county, N.C. At the outbreak of the Civil War his father left him and his mother to struggle for an existence for three years, after which time his father returned, and moved the family to Monroe county, Tennessee. Here Mr. Coe grew to manhood, working on the farm. In 1877 they returned to their old North Carolina home, at which place he received a common school education. Mr. Coe came to Georgia (Franklin county) in 1881, and worked in a saw mill, near Martin. In this locality he found his first wife, Miss Rhesa Smith, whom he married in 1882. Soon after his marriage Mr. Coe went to farming and teaching school. This work occupied his time during the next three years. The next move is back to Clay county, N.C., where his wife soon died, and left him with two small boys to raise. In 1888 he returned to his former community in Georgia and married his present wife, formerly Miss Martha Farrow, taking up his abode on a farm near the place where he now resides. He was appointed postmaster as Eastanollee in 1889, which position he has since held. The office paid scarcely anything at first, but has increased in business from year to year. Two rural routes have been established from this office, largely through the efforts of Mr. Coe. He has served as Notary Public and Justice of the Peace for five years, and from a poor boy, has accumulated enough to possess a comfortable home. In addition to this he conducts a general mercantile and fertilizer business, all of which net him a very nice income. He takes great interest in the educational affairs and all public improvements in Stephens county, and champions every movement for the betterment of his community. Mr. Coe has been a leading member of the Baptist church for 36 years. He is the father of ten children—five boys and five girls, the eldest being 25 years and the youngest a babe of six months. Nine of these children are living. The embodiment of rugged honesty, energy and business ability, Mr. Coe presents a type of citizenship, of which his community and the county have a right to be proud.
