Biographical Sketches Col. B. F. Davis. Just across the Blue Ridge mountains, at the foot of those peaks which lift their heads through the clouds and touch the sky beyond, was born the subject of this sketch, Benjamin Franklin Davis, September 2, 1882. He is the youngest of a family of five children. Two of his brothers, J. H. Davis, of Hiawassee, and Joseph T. Davis, of Clayton, are both successful lawyers. He has two married sisters, both of whom live near the old Union county home. Gaining inspiration from the scenes of childhood while yet a boy, he disengaged himself from the routine duties on a mountain farm, and, by dint of energy and to gratify an ambition which had grown within him, entered the Hiawassee High School. It was at this place that it was made possible for him to obtain a splendid English education. The brothers and sisters were all school teachers and he followed in their footsteps. Every one of the children of this remarkable family taught four years or more. Col. Davis himself taught in the counties of Lumpkin and Franklin. Like the other boys, his attention soon turned to law, and he studied it before discontinuing his educational work. His examination was held in December, 1905, and the following April his papers were passed upon, giving him a license to practice in the courts of our State. The time had now come when he must select a location where he could begin active practice—a town with a future. A North-Georgian, to the manner born, he could not decide to live in any other section. There were too many ties binding him to the “old red hills” and mountains of Georgia. It did not take him long to decide. Stephens county was created about that time, and Toccoa appeared most prominently on the map, hence his decision to take up his abode with us. Col. Davis is a member of the Baptist church, is Noble Grand in the order of Odd Fellows, and is secretary of the Retail Merchants and Business Men’s Association of Toccoa. He is a hard worker; the lamp always burns late in his office or his room. He has conducted himself in a most exemplary manner, and has won the confidence of an already large clientage. Able, honest and conscientious, he will accomplish greater and more difficult problems in the years to come. [Photo from newspaper article.] Transcribed by June Coker McNew, January 2011.
