Biographical Sketches John W. McClure. “Cap” McClure, our Chief of Police, was born in “Old Habersham,” near Clarkesville, March 1, 1859. He is the oldest of a family of seven children, five girls and two boys. Rev. and Mrs. Robert McClure, his parents, are still hale and heartyat ripe old ages. Every one of their children and grand-children are alive and in good health. He was reared on the farm, and had very few school advantages, consequently he learned the lesson of self reliance. Was married Dec. 25, 1879, to Miss Josie Jarrard, and settled on a farm until he came to Toccoa in 1896. He engaged in an livery business here until 1898, when he was elected chief of police; he held this position four years and resigned to conduct a livery business again. Last year he went to his farm just outside the city limits, but was prevailed upon this year to serve Toccoa again as head of the police department. Aside from this position he conducts a heavy transfer business. “Cap” McClure is a member of the Methodist church, and a fighter against immorality. Years ago he was a leader in the fight against the opening of saloons here and helped drive the bar rom out of the county. He is a successful champion of decency and order, and as an officer he is without a peer in this section of the State. He is a pleasant, honest and accommodating, but firm, officer. He says what he means and means what he says. He is an exemplary Christian gentleman, and one of those rare characters that commands the respect and esteem of both friend and foe.
