Biographical Sketches W. A. Mitchell. Our neighboring town of Martin also contributes many worthy and enterprising citizens to our county, among whom is Mr. W. A. Mitchell, who is one of the progressive and most highly respected merchants of Martin. Mr. Mitchell was born on a farm at Long Bridge, near Carnesville, Franklin county, Ga., November 29, 1856, and is of Irish-Welsh descent. He had six brothers and three sisters. His grandfather, Wm. Mitchell, was one of the earliest settlers of Franklin county, and moved there while the country was still inhabited by many Indians. His father spent his whole life of 81 years in the county. He received a common country school education with one year at Carnesville, after which he taught school the term of ’79-’80. In the fall of 1880 he moved to Martin. He then took a business course at Lexington, Ky., and in the fall of 1881 secured a position as clerk with R.D. Yow & Co. at Avalon. Later he held a similar position with T.R. Yow & Co. at Martin. In 1883 he went into business with I. W. Randall & Co. at Martin. Seven years later he bought out the interests of the other members of the company, and is still conducting a general mercantile and fertilizer business there, with a large and steadily increasing trade. Buying and selling cotton is also included in his occupations. He was married to Miss Mary Randall Dec. 25, 1884, and is the father of seven children, four girls and three boys. The three oldest girls have been well educated, Miss Mary being now an efficient music teacher in a college at Dayton, Va. Mr. Mitchell has always been popular in his community and has served as Justice of the Peace and Notary Public for 26 consecutive years. He was also mayor of Martin several terms. He is a prominent member of the Baptist church and faithfully serves as clerk and deacon. He is also popular in fraternity circles, having held various offices, and is a Shriner in the Masonic order and a creditable member of the Odd Fellows, Royal Arcanum and W.O.W. [Woodmen of the World]. Mr. Mitchell is an enthusiastic, public-spirited gentleman, and none are more loyal to the welfare of the county or more interested in the uplifting and educational affairs of his community. As a business man he ranks at the front in this section. Endowed with business sagacity, he has risen from the ranks and is ever equal to any intricate business problem. He is just in the prime of life, and his days of usefulness have, virtually, just begun. [Transcribed by June Coker McNew, January 2011.
