Biographical Sketches C. L. Mize. Mr. C. L. Mize was born in Franklin county, August 14, 1850, at Flintsville post office, now Mize, Ga. His earliest experiences were very arduous and full of interest. When the Civil War came on he was, of course, too young to enlist, being only eleven years of age, but he rendered much assistance to the soldiers who were often in this section during that period. One of the positions he held during the war was that of mail carrier. That was before stamps were used; everyone was required to pay a stated amount before receiving their mail, the price being based on the distance sent. This was indeed a very responsible position for a mere lad, but his services were well performed. Mr. Mize was governed—by a strict sense of duty, by honest, square dealings with his fellow-men. His father was killed in the fierce battle at Jonesboro, Ga., in 1864, which left upon him the responsibility of supporting his mother, a brother and five sisters. Purposing in his heart to perform the duties encumbent upon him, he put to work on the farm with a will. Several years later he began a mercantile business at Mize, which he continued with marked success for many years. One of the many valuable lessons he learned on the farm, and afterwards encouraged, was the breeding and raising of hogs. In this line he led the farmers of the county. He is yet a great believer in agricultural pursuits, and holds that if any man will apply himself on a Northeast Georgia farm, he will be amply repaid for his efforts; that old Mother Earth will yield rich treasures to the man of common sense and energy. Mr. Mize served as Tax Collector of Franklin county from 1883 to 1887, in which capacity he won the commendation of his fellow-citizens. Mr. Mize was married to Miss May Sue Adderhold September 25, 1872. Six children, three boys and three girls, were born to bless their union. He came to Toccoa in 1895, and since that time has served as Councilman for three years, was Tax Assessor three years, and is now closing a three years’ service as Tax Collector of Stephens county. As Councilman he was an influential factor in the floating of bonds for the city school, and it was largely through his efforts that the school site was agreed upon and purchased. Again he was a leading promoter of The Toccoa Oil Mill, which industry has proven a great commercial advantage to Toccoa. For thirty-six years he has been a leader in the Baptist church. For ten years he has been Clerk of the Tugalo Association, but resigned this position at the last meeting of that body. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, and has been the Treasurer of the Toccoa Lodge for several years. Since making Toccoa his home, Mr. Mize has been identified with the leaders in religious and educational affairs. He has performed many a valuable service for this good little city which he is always proud to call his home. There is a tone in his character which appeals to men. The warm side of his heart is always close to his associates. His Christian examples, his high ideals are characteristics which give tone to the production of citizens, and to the moral land material uplift of his community.
