Biographical Sketches


John E. Tabor.  Everybody knows this big-hearted, accommodating salesman, who 
is at present behind the counter at Edwards-Smith Co’s., but after this year 
will be the County Treasurer of Stephens.  He is another Franklin county boy, 
and had to “hustle around” while yet very young to support a widowed mother, 
himself and three other children.

These children were to be educated, too, but he soon accomplished the task, 
though ofttimes making many personal sacrifices.

Born September 25, 1866, and bereft of a father at the age of five, it was up 
to him to soon take the lead, since he was the oldest of the children.  That 
he succeeded in the management of the farm affairs and the educating of the 
children is evinced by the fact that his two sisters and brother obtained a 
good common school education, and have succeeded in their chosen fields of 
endeavor.

With the exception of six months, at the age of 17, John Tabor never attended 
school since he was large enough to hold a plow.  Nevertheless, he is one of 
the most popular salesmen in this section, and has good business 
qualifications.

At the age of 21 he went into the shingle business, and succeeded.  Next he 
was found in the employ of the Southern Railway for three years, and was ready 
for promotion to the position of conductor, when an accident occurred, which 
deprived him of work for six months.  When he got well his services were again 
desired, but he gave up railroading and entered actively into a business 
career.  For 19 years before and during his years in business he operated a 
threshing machine throughout Habersham, Rabun, Banks and Franklin counties.  
Remarkable to the extreme is the fact that during all this time he never had a 
dispute with a farmer.  He probably knows more people than any man in this 
section of the State.

At one time he was a member of the firm of Mozeley & Tabor, of this city, 
later selling his interest to his partner.  Later on he was with Mr. Thos.  
Mize, the firm being known as Mize & Tabor.  After two years with the latter 
firm he sold out his interest to Mr. Mize.  Since that time he has been with 
W. C. Edwards & Co. and has handled a vast amount of business for that firm.  
Honest and accommodating, he is sought by the buying public, who are always 
ready to stand by him.

In the spring of this year he was solicited by his friends to enter the race 
for County Treasurer which he did, and defeated two opponents in the June 
primary by a big majority.  One feature of the campaign was his canvassing the 
county on foot, which took well with the people.

Mr. Tabor is happily married, is the father of five interesting, bright little 
children, and a substantial member of the Toccoa M. E. Church.
