Mrs. Fermor Barrett. So fades a summer cloud away, So sinks the gale when storms are o’er; So gently shuts the eye of day, So dies the wave along the shore. A holy quiet reigns around, A calm which life nor death destroys; Nothing destroys that peace profound, Which her unfettered soul enjoys. Last week the community was saddened by the death of Mrs. Fermor Barrett, who died at her home Thursday night at 10:30 o’clock. She had heart trouble, and for a year or more past had been in failing health. Just recently she had been at the Presbyterian hospital in Atlanta for treatment, having returned home only a short time before her death. Mrs. Barrett was born and reared in Virginia, her maiden name being Miss Anna Blanton. As a child even, she was bright and studious, taking up eagerly the good educational advantages that were afforded her. She was graduated from a normal school in Petersburg, Va., going from there to attend a normal school in Nashville, Tenn., where she won a diploma, and later took her degree from the University of Nashville, at Nashville, Tenn. It is said that at the University of Nashville, she met a bright-minded young man, also a student there, whom she afterwards married. Eighteen years ago she was married to Mr. Fermor Barrett—at that time a prominent educator. About twelve years ago they moved to Toccoa, where they have since made their home. Mrs. Barrett possessed an exceptionally bright mind, and was regarded as an authority upon literary topics. For several years she was president of the woman’s Literary Club of Toccoa. Besides her husband, the Hon. Fermor Barrett, she is mourned by four children, Fermor, Jr., Clara, Martha, and Leigh, and also a large circle of admiring friends and acquaintances. She was a devout member of the Episcopal church, always taking an active interest in church work of every kind. After a prayer at the house, the funeral services were conducted at St. Matthias chapel at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Thomas Burry, assisted by the rector, Rev. Thomas Duck. There were many lovely flowers sent by friends. Mrs. Barrett’s sister, Mrs. H. J. Jones, of Holly Springs, Miss.; her brother, Mr. Gurvin Blanton, of Atlanta; Mr. and Mrs. Barrett and daughter, Miss Ruth Barrett, of Washington, Ga., attended the funeral. The bereaved husband and children have the sympathy of the entire community in their loss. Additional Comments: The obituary, dated 7 Jan 1909, states, "Last week the community was saddened . . . ," I don't know if "last week" refers to a date in December, 1908, or a date in January, 1909.
