ODIT HOLCOMB, 56, passed away suddenly Monday morning at the depot in Lavonia, GA. Mr. Holcomb had reported for work with his regular crew in Toccoa to go out on the Elberton Local and told his fellow workmen that he felt good. After arriving at Lavonia, he was helping unload a car when he fell in the car and succumbed before any assistance could be given him. Mr. Holcomb known to hundreds as "Father" Holcomb, was a man with hundreds of friends who loved and respected him. Men in all walks of life were friends of "Father" Holcomb. His passing was received with deep feeling in Toccoa when the report came that he had passed away. Many friends gathered at the funeral home where his remains were taken to see him and expressions of love and sympathy were many. Father Holcomb began his career with Southern Railway at the age of 38, and for twenty years, he had worked faithfully and diligently for the company. Men in his crew said, "he was the hardest working man they ever saw;" other men said he was loved by everybody. He was ordered about two weeks ago to give up his work on account of his heart by his doctor, but "Father" Holcomb wouldn't give up, he wanted to finish his work here as he began early in life with his men on the road. He leaves his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Bartow Lowery, Mrs. N. L. Garland, Jr., and Mrs. Robert Garland; two sons, Mrs. W. W. Holcomb and Mrs. J. R. Holcomb of Chattahoochee, FL; one brother, Mr. Will Holcomb and three sisters, Mrs. Dock Adams, Mrs. Chandler Davis and Mrs. Dolphus Davis, of Toccoa. Impressive funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the residence on Currahee Road with Rev. Holman Kelly, Rev. A. C. Craft and Rev. Blake officiating. Interment was in Toccoa cemetery. Bond and Northcutt Funeral Directors.
