Mr. Payne was returning to camp in New Jersey at the time of the accident. Jerry was born November 12, 1943, in Knoxville, Tennessee, but had spent most of his life in Toccoa. He was a graduate of Stephens County High School. After graduation, he entered the service of his country and had served for the past 5 years with the Signal Corps of the U. S. Army. He had just completed an 18 months tour of duty in Korea. Survivors beside his Mother include two sisters, Doris McAvoy of Baldwin, GA; Louise Vinson of Toccoa; 2 brothers, M. T. Payne of Clinton, SC and Talmadge Payne, Jr. of the residence; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Burton Payne of Toccoa; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from Mullins Ford Baptist Church with Rev. James Whitlock and Rev. James Downs and Rev. Deweece Addison officiating. Burial was in Mullins Ford Cemetery with full military honors accorded by a Detachment of U. S. Army Personnel from Fort Gordon. Accree-Davis Funeral Home, Toccoa.
