The far-reaching effect of the war has been painfully brought home to this community in the death of Archie Simpson. His is the first name from Toccoa to be in a casualty list in a training camp, here or in France. He was born and reared here, and is well remembered as a young man of kind disposition, generous and likable, and possessing excellent habits. For the past ten years he has lived in Florida, where his faithfulness and efficiency won him promotion as a railroad man. Three months ago when the call came to him to go into training, Archie went to Fort Meyers, Washington, D.C. Later he was transferred to Hoboken, N.J. Three weeks ago he started overseas, but after sixteen hours on the ocean was brought back to St. Mary's hospital critically ill. He grew rapidly worse and died October 3. His body reached Toccoa Monday afternoon, and was buried Tuesday morning from the family residence. The impressive funeral service was conducted by Rev. R. E. Telford, of Cornelia. "Arch," as he was familiarly and affectionately called by his friends, has as truly given his life in this great struggle as if he had died in the trenches "over there," or had met death going "over the top." He responded to the government willingly, and obeyed every mandate like a patriot. He faced death with the calmness and the courage of an experienced soldier. The heart of the entire community goes out to Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Simpson, his parents, and their adult sons and daughter in this hour of their great sorrow.
