Joe Holmes Whiten, 56, of West Currahee Street, died Friday night, January 7, 
in the Stephens County Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Whiten was born October 4, 1920, in Franklin County, a son of the late 
Lester F. and Lillie Oakley Whiten and had lived most of his life in Stephens 
County.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, charter member of B.P.O.E. Elks 
Lodge No 1820, charter member of the Toccoa Country Club, honorary member of 
Sky Valley Ski and Golf Resort and Kingwood Country Club. He was an Army 
Veteran and was owner and operator of Whiten’s Golf Cart Rental and Sales. He 
had owned and operated Whiten’s Shoe Shop of Toccoa for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Leona Carroll Whiten of the home; two sons, 
Wallace G. of Toccoa and Larry J. Whiten of Gainesville; one daughter, Mrs. 
Connie Lee Buffington of Toccoa; four brothers, Jack Whiten, Bud Whiten, and 
Ted Whiten of Toccoa, and Felix Whiten of Norcross, Georgia; four sisters, 
Mrs. Bill Steele and Mrs. Joe Dean, both of Toccoa, Mrs. Ray Whitehead of 
Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Bobbie Johns of Norcross, Georgia; mother-in-law Mrs. 
Lavonia Carroll of Toccoa; five grandchildren and a number of nieces and 
nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.  Sunday from the Chapel of Whitlock 
Mortuary with Rev Ray Richardson, Rev. Charles Savage, Rev. David Turner and 
Rev. Wade Lord officiating. Burial followed in Stephens Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Johnny Davis, Homer Smith, Arthur Walker, Charles Jordan, 
Verner Mulker and Ronnie Murray. Whitlock Mortuary was in charge of 
arrangements.
