W. W. Arnold and Dr. R. E. L. Barnum. He thus received the initials of his father, but was not a Junior, since his father's name was Adolphus Butler. Upon the death of the father, the family moved to Molena, Georgia where in 1916 Barnum graduated from high school. For two years, thereafter, he was engaged in the banking and grocery business. In the fall of 1918 he entered the S. A. T. C. at Mercer University, Macon, Georgia. Upon the conclusion of the war, he was discharged and returned to the grocery store. The next eight years were spent in the grocery, as a traveling salesman, and as an official in a bank. After having resisted the "call to the ministry" several times, he finally yielded in May, 1926 and entered Mercer University the following September. Because of over-work he lost a year's work from illness. He was graduated with the Bachelor of Theology degree the following August. While in school he served as pastor at the Elam Baptist church in Jones County, and at the Cross Keys Baptist church in Macon. In October 1931, he moved to Fort Gaines and is now serving the churches at Fort Gaines, and Mt. Gilead. Brother Hawkes is one of the young preachers of the Bethel Association and is making good as a preacher, pastor and church builder. He is untiring in his work and devoted to the cause of the Master. It is these consecrated young preachers with their lives before them who must take the places of the older ones to perpetuate the Master's cause.
