Averett Family Cemetery Index, Stewart County, GA AVERETT FAMILY CEMETERY INDEX, STEWART COUNTY, GA Submitted: 09-11-2000 Made Available to The UsGenWeb Archives by: Kevin Lee Averett - averettk@aol.com On 12 February 2000 I located the "Averett" family grave site located on the property that was once owned by my g.g.g. grandfather Albright (Albret) Averett in Renfroe, Stewart County, Georgia. The family grave site can be located by turning off of U. S. Highway 280 and crossing the bridge into Renfroe. You will see an old house on the left and an old church straight ahead. The dirt road will come to a Y intersection in front of the church. Take the road to the right and follow the dirt road until you see a small dirt road to the left (the dirt road is just prior to an open area where two homes are located). Turn left on the small dirt road and follow it through the trees until you reach an open area (this will be about 150 yards). The cemetery is located on the right in the trees by the fence line. On the other side of the fence is two homes, one home is painted white with gray trim and the other is painted yellow. The total distance from U. S. Highway 280 where the bridge is located to the turn off of the small dirt road is 4 tenths of a mile. The property is currently owned by Raymond George Smith and Ruby Smith. The Smith home can be located by taking the road to the left at the Y intersection, their home can be found on the right (mailbox with the name Smith). There is a total of 4 graves at this site. They are: 1. Albright (Albret) Averett - Tombstone reads: Albret Averett, Died Aug 10th, 1868, aged 69 years. This headstone is broken and lying on the ground by the base of where Mary (Vinson) Averett's headstone once was. Dates on the stone are probably incorrect because his Will was probated on 15 September 1867 in Stewart County, Georgia. He probably died 10 Aug 1867 and was 68 years at the time of his death. It is believed that his son Eli Monroe Averett may have had a tombstone placed there many years after his death and was not sure of the exact year he died. This tombstone looks much newer than the others located at this site. 2. Mary (Vinson) Averett - All that remains of her grave is her footstone which has the initials MA and the base of where her headstone once was. The headstone could not be located. 3. Infant Stephens - Tombstone reads: Stephens Infant son of Curtis V. & Mollie I. Stephens Born & Died July 10, 1902 of such is the Kingdom of Heaven This tombstone is lying on the ground. 4. Joseph Williams - Tombstone reads: Joseph Williams There are no other writings on his tombstone. His grave is surrounded by a small iron fence. This tombstone stands upright. I have already transcribed the information at this site (as stated above) and wish for you to add this as part of The Tombstone Transcription Project. I have photos of the tombstones if you need them. If you need additional information please contact me at the address below or email me.
